Danger In Your Grocery Cart #5: High Fructose Corn Syrup

Exam your food and read all of the ingredients in your refined, processed food including the meat you consume. You will notice one repeating ingredient, CORN. Corn is everywhere. Corn is not vegetable, but it is grain and over 90% of corn is GMO.

According the Princeton University study, "the first long-term study of the effects of high-fructose corn syrup consumption on obesity in lab animal -- monitored weight gain, body fat and triglyceride levels in rats with access to high-fructose corn syrup over a period of six months. Compared to animals eating only rat chow, rats on a diet rich in high-fructose corn syrup showed characteristic signs of a dangerous condition known in humans as the metabolic syndrome, including abnormal weight gain, significant increases in circulating triglycerides and augmented fat deposition, especially visceral fat around the belly. Male rats in particular ballooned in size: Animals with access to high-fructose corn syrup gained 48 percent more weight than those eating a normal diet." http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S26/91/22K07/

"Fructose is metabolized differently from glucose; the body doesn't respond to it by producing insulin to convey it into cells to be used as energy. Rather, it is metabolized in the liver, which turns it first into glucose and then, if there is no call for glucose, into triglycerides-fat" (In Defense Of Food, Michael Pollan).

Cows' natural diet is grass, but they are fed corn. Therefore, you are eating corn second hand. Most likely, you are consuming GMO corn.

Beware of the hidden ingredients. Educate yourself for better health.

  1. Na Great post. I have trouble getting my thoughts together when I'm explaining things to family and friends. Your post will help me be more articulate.
I found your blog a while back. My sister in law and I spent a weekend at CHI for the Raw Chef classes and we heard your name mentioned quite a few times. Love your blog and I follow it on my Google Reader. Thanks Cynthia
